Kim Jin-Sil

Abstract
Objective: This study was performed using the secondary data analysis of the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey to understand the effect of smartphone usage hours and overdependence of adolescents in Korea on oral health.

Methods: Chi-Square test and logistic regression analysis were performed to identify the effect of smartphone usage and overdependence of adolescents on oral health.

Results: The study results demonstrated that among the 54,948 subjects, 46.1% (n=25,332) experienced symptoms of oral disease in the last 12 months; furthermore, 54.2% used smartphone 4 hours or longer during the weekdays and 74.7% during the weekend. Adolescents who used smartphones for ¡Ã2 hours during the weekdays experienced oral disease symptoms 0.94 times higher than those who did not use smartphone at all (p=0.036). In addition, those who used smartphones for ¡Ã2 hours during the weekends experienced symptoms of oral disease 0.88 times higher than those who used smartphones for <2 hours (p<0.001). Regarding overdependence to smartphones, adolescents in the overdependent group experienced oral diseases 2.19 times more than those in non-dependent group (p<0.001).

Conclusion: Overuse and overdependence of adolescents to smartphones have deleterious effects on oral health.
